Frequently Asked Questions
What is Chaperone?
Chaperone is a nonprofit, political action committee that has been organized to focus on bringing endorsable candidates to run for the Board of Education and beyond. The committee consists of engaged parents, business leaders, and community members that have a vested interest in the success of Grand Island’s public schools and the students they educate.
Who started Chaperone?
Chaperone was created by a small group of community-minded individuals who have concerns about the long-term trajectory of the public schools of Grand Island.
What is the political affiliation of Chaperone?
Chaperone is not associated with a political affiliation. Our goal is not to push a political agenda, but rather to keep a watchful eye over our school administration and Board of Education while supporting our teachers and students.
How are candidates vetted and nominated?
Candidates go through a thorough vetting process to ensure that their guidelines and agenda align with the goals of Chaperone. The currently endorsed candidates presented themselves at a Chaperone team meeting where they discussed why they wanted to serve and their life experiences.
Can I participate in the nomination process?
Yes. Anyone wishing to run for the Board of Education is welcome to seek Chaperone’s endorsement. If you, or someone you know, would be willing to serve on a future Board of Education, please contact us at chaperonegi@gmail.com.
What happens after the election?
Chaperone will have a continuous role in demanding transparency from our school leadership and communicating with the public any information we feel they need to be aware of. We anticipate holding public meetings of discussion in the future where current events will be discussed, board members will be invited to speak, and ideas will be shared on how to further grow the advocacy of our group.
Who funds Chaperone?
Chaperone is fully funded by concerned community members wanting to see a positive change in the trajectory of our Grand Island Public School system.
